Sermon Themes

Midweek Lenten Sermon Theme

Lent is a time to focus on the life and suffering of Jesus Christ. As we focus on the life and suffering of Jesus, we are called to follow His example of loving God and loving people. Through a study of the Lord’s prayer we will learn how to more faithfully love God and love people in our daily lives.

Ash Wednesday – March 5
“Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.”

Lent 1 – March 12
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

Lent 2 – March 19
“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Lent 3 – March 26
“And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

Lent 4 – April 2
And lead us not into temptation.”

Lent 5 – April 9
“But deliver us from evil.”

Sundays in Lent Sermon Theme

The Christian faith is all about Jesus. During the Sundays of Lent and Holy Week we will be focusing our hearts and minds on who Jesus is through a focus on Jesus’ seven “I Am” statements in the Gospel of John.
In Exodus, God appears to Moses at the burning bush and names himself, “I Am who I Am.” In the Gospel of John, Jesus draws on this story in Exodus and gives us seven names to call him, seven “I Am” statements.

First Sunday in Lent – March 9
“I AM the Bread of Life.”

Second Sunday in Lent – March 16
“I AM the Light of the World.”

Third Sunday in Lent – March 23
“I AM the Door.”

Fourth Sunday in Lent 3 – March 30
“I AM the Good Shepherd.”

Fifth Sunday in Lent – April 6
I AM the Vine.”

Palm Sunday – April 13
“I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”

Easter Sunday – April 20
“I AM the Resurrection and the Life.”

My Holy Week Journey – Lent Pop-up Window Calendar

Follow Jesus on his journey through Jerusalem during Holy Week. Children love to open the windows which reveal the colorful scenes of Jesus’ journey. Each day leads him closer to the cross and ultimately to the open tomb of Easter Day. Create a fun morning and evening prayer activity through this special week as two windows per day are opened to reveal the story of Jesus’ great gift of love.

The Way, the Truth, and the Life: Daily Devotions for Lent

Henri J.M. Nouwen, one of the most beloved spiritual thinkers of the 20th century, wrote profoundly about Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life. Excerpts from Nouwen’s inspiring insights are paired with original reflections and prayers in this booklet for each day of Lent, as we come to experience more fully the path our Savior trod to the reality of the Cross for our eternal benefit.

Sow, Now It’s Lent!

The daily Lenten devotions and activities in this devotional booklet springs from the growth and garden imagery present throughout Scripture. Beginning in the Garden of Eden—where, through Adam and Eve, paradise was lost—the path winds through the promises of the Old Testament and blooms into life out of the many farming parables of Jesus. It leads us, at Easter, to the empty garden tomb…and the New Eden, where, through Christ, paradise is restored for all believers.

Walking in His Ways

Picture your own journey following in Jesus’ footsteps all the way to Calvary. Walking in His Ways is a path of blessing for families this Lent, as popular author Emily Jaminet shares tips for how family members can travel this holy road with Jesus. Make this Lent six weeks of spiritual transformation. Families will “live Lent” by focusing on major aspects of our Lord’s life and learning from him. The Scripture verses, reflections, conversations and activities will help each person better live out his or her faith and walk in the ways of Christ with prayer, fasting from wants and desires and giving alms. Special downloadable coloring pages and challenges round out the experience.

The Road Back to God

This classic set of devotions by Creative Communications founder Larry Neeb (1939-2019) is designed to help us discover a deeper and richer relationship with God. The truth, of course, is that we can never find God unless he first finds us. As we draw near to Christ’s cross, God’s forgiving and renewing power animates us in our Christian walk of active love and service.

Places of the Passion

Journey with Jesus through the Holy Land, listening to him teach, witnessing miracles and discovering how our Savior fulfills the prophesies of the Old Testament.

These devotions for Lent, written by theology professor Reed Lessing, follow the entire Gospel of Matthew with an eye toward the places of the Passion where Jesus is headed to suffer, die and rise again for our salvation. Readers will begin to see that every place Jesus goes along his path to the cross hints at his ultimate mission to take our place for our redemption so that we might have a place in heaven with him forever.

Featured Lenten Artwork

On the Sundays of Lent, our sermons and worship will reflect the theme Knowing God: The Seven “I AM” Statements of Jesus. During this time, we will feature some of Trinity’s art collection that is related to this theme. Two pieces will be displayed at each campus, and partway through Lent they will trade places. The artworks that will be displayed are “Bread of Life” by Mary Kirk, “Holy Ground” by Dorothy Lightfoot, “I Am the Bread of Life” by Barry L. Kennedy, and “I Am” by Kerry Kellermeyer. Be sure to look for them on Sunday mornings!

Dorothy Lightfoot’s husband George wrote to us to let us know that Dorothy passed away on March 14, 2011. He explained that her painting was titled “Holy Ground” representing the theme of the Religious Art Show that year. George went on to say, “Dorothy and I always enjoyed submitting our paintings to the Religious Art Show that for many years was sponsored by Trinity Lutheran Church. This painting was Dorothy’s submittal one year. It was selected to be purchased by the church and she was thrilled. She would also be thrilled to have a photo of her painting included in the 75th anniversary book you’re compiling. Best wishes and God’s Blessings, George Lightfoot.”
