If we do not know where we are going, how do we know if we get there?

Chances are you have belonged to an organization with a mission statement. And chances are you cannot remember what that mission was. You may have a vague idea of the organization’s purpose or remember key parts of the mission, but you probably cannot recite the mission statement of the organization.

At Trinity Lutheran Church Preschool, our mission is:

Trinity Lutheran Church Preschool supports the family by nurturing the growth of young children through developmentally appropriate experiences in a Christian environment.

Any clear school mission statement should be able to answer questions like: What is our purpose? What are we supposed to be doing? What collective commitments have we made? Is it clear what we stand for? But answering those questions is only the beginning. How do we know if we are fulfilling our mission?

Each year, the preschool asks parents to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire allows parents to rate the school’s effectiveness in multiple areas, share their favorite things about the school, suggest changes, and describe the preschool using three words. Responses are tallied, and then comes the moment of truth…are we fulfilling our mission? Here is a snapshot of this year’s results:

A Prayer for the Preschool

Dear Lord,

Like Job, we know that you can do all things and no purpose of yours can be thwarted. We pray that our preschool’s mission to support families and provide children with developmentally appropriate experiences in a Christian atmosphere will be realized. Lord we thank you for our successes and our opportunities to improve. Please guide us in our journey, bless us with wisdom, and fill our hearts with a spirit of service. Amen.
