Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
This message is to inform you of a mission to bring the news of God’s love to the K-10 corridor area near De Soto, Kansas.
De Soto, Kansas is a community of more than 6,000 people living on the western edge of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Although the proximity allows for access to various cultural activities, very few churches exist in the community, none of which are LCMS churches.
In Acts 1:8 Jesus instructs us that with the help of the Holy Spirit, we become His “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” A group of people from Kansas City metropolitan LCMS churches began gathering in early 2022 in prayer and Bible study to discern how to follow God’s command and bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to De Soto, Eudora, Linwood, and other communities along the K-10 corridor. To exemplify this mission, the new church will be named Light of the World Lutheran Church.
The Kansas District of the LCMS is partially funding this church plant and asked Beautiful Savior in Olathe to be the mother church by providing pastoral and administrative support for this plant.
A temporary facility has been located for weekly worship and Bible Study. The first worship service is planned for Reformation Sunday, October 29, 2023.
Recently, Panasonic Energy Corporation of North America has begun construction on an assembly plant which will employ approximately 4,000 people. The City of De Soto expects a major influx of people to the area.
After prayerful thought and discussions, our group determined an early education center should be created along with the establishment of a Lutheran Church in De Soto, Kansas.
Our goal is that this church be fully functional, chartered, and independent in approximately 3 years. To reach that goal, we have several major steps over the next year or so including calling a full time Pastor to lead this congregation, purchasing a suitable piece of land for a permanent home, and developing the early childcare center.
