This summer, Trinity Lutheran Church’s Missions Committee helped make a lasting impact through a grant to Concordia Mission Institute’s (CMI) Kids Camp—a vibrant and faith-filled program designed especially for missionary kids (MKs). With 52 children enrolled, this was the largest CMI Kids Camp ever, and Trinity’s support played a vital role in its success.
Among the campers were 18 older children (ages 10+), whose parents serve in diverse mission fields including Taiwan, Shanghai, France, West Africa, Native American communities, Korea, and missionary care roles. Some children are U.S.-based, with parents who support global missions. These young people share a unique experience as Third Culture Kids (TCKs), growing up in cultures different from their parents’ and often navigating a blend of identities.
The camp’s theme, Freedom in Christ, guided the week’s activities and reflections. Each day explored a different aspect of this freedom:
-
“Free to Go!” – Campers completed a vocational assessment to discover their God-given gifts and consider how they might be called to serve.
-
“Free to Be Loved” – A highlight of the week was the challenge course outing, where children could participate at their own comfort level, embracing the freedom to be themselves.
-
“Free for All Eternity” – This deeply resonant theme invited campers to reflect on the restoration of God’s kingdom and their longing for Jesus’ return. The book Swirly, which explores the experience of being a third culture kid, sparked meaningful conversations and connections.
Thanks to Trinity’s grant, the camp was able to provide:
-
A field trip to the challenge course
-
Lunches hosted and served by Trinity members
-
Books and consumable activity materials for various age groups
-
Snacks and water play items for younger children
With programming running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., these resources brought variety and joy to the children’s days. Most importantly, the camp gave MKs a space to explore their faith independently of their parents’ vocation, connect with peers who understand their unique experiences, and grow in their identity as beloved children of God.
We celebrate the ways God is working through Trinity’s mission support and thank you for being part of this ministry to missionary families around the world.
